The Accelerated Mobile Pages Project (AMP) is an online publishing format created by Google.
It’s a way to optimize web pages for mobile browsing using a special code, AMP-HTML for Mobile-First Indexing with a benchmark speed of 2 seconds for page load.
According to Google, “The AMP Project is an open-source initiative aiming to make the web better for all. The project enables the creation of websites and ads that are consistently fast, beautiful and high-performing across devices and distribution platforms.”
Why is this important? Here is a quote from their webmaster blog:
"Starting July 1, 2019, Mobile-First Indexing will be used to index “all new, previously unknown to Google Search, websites.”
The new algorithm change featuring Mobile-First Indexing will put a Hard-Core emphasis on how sites perform on mobile devices and the de-listing process will begin on poor performing sites.
This will cause a flurry of calls from so called "experts" who will offer to redo your site.
